Low maintenance / high impact garden
The garden had been newly paved to provide an entertaining space adjacent to the recent large extension. Fabulous new bi-fold doors had been fitted but they looked out onto a rather shabby lawn with a few old shrubs and a blank fence which dominated the view.
The new design needed to be low maintenance, include additional seating areas, create a feeling of depth as the garden wasn’t very deep and provide real interest and a ‘Wow’ factor from the house.
Using the existing shape of the paving I created interlinking circles on either side of the garden, the sunnier left hand side featured a planted gravel area in one of the circles. On the right hand side the new shape flowed around to the summerhouse which helped tie the whole garden together.
The central section near the house featured two shallow raised beds and behind this a gorgeous curved raised bed with a hardwood seat was constructed. The planting included grasses and perennials for colour and movement, with a few small evergreen shrubs to provide structure in the winter.
The garden has now had time to mature and it looks great all year round, the raised beds and gravel area are easy to maintain. The planting is now the star of the show, the tall elegant grasses look super against the fence and will provide a ‘Wow’ factor for many more years to come.

The Stipa Gigantea is magnificent against the black fence and moves gently in the breeze really scattering light. Brilliant! The beautiful Cornus Kousa is covered in flowers/bracts this year.
