Community parklands project
This was a large design project focusing on a prominent 5 acre area of urban scrubland that took 2 years from concept to completion.
The brief was to create a Parkland that would be accessible to all, enhance and encourage wildlife and create an area for education and leisure with the provision of a nature walk, sensory planting, prairie meadow and seating areas. I was engaged as Landscape Designer and Project Manager by the trustees of the Parkland.
I initially designed concept ideas for the layout, this included a perimeter path, tree & hedge planting, picnic areas and sensory borders. Following community meetings, a design was agreed & I provided scaled plan drawings, schedule of works documents, and material specifications and maintenance schedules , these enabled the project team to obtain funding for the construction along with the necessary planning permissions.
Tenders were obtained for the different elements of the project and construction started with phase 1, Pathway Contract followed by phase 2 Hard Landscaping. The soft landscaping team then prepared the planting areas and work began on the prairie meadow and sensory borders.
Once complete tree planting commenced, this involved sourcing and planting 30 semi mature native trees. I co-ordinated the contactors and liaised & advised the client of progress throughout the build.
The Parkland is now maturing and it has fulfilled the vision of providing an accessible place for all the community to enjoy in harmony with nature.
