The existing garden consisted of a tired lawn, huge tall conifers along the left hand side and thick dense planting at the bottom of the garden which hid a steep slope and steps down to a small patio & summerhouse. The beautiful view across the valley was completely obscured and a bench faced into the garden rather than looking out at the hills and trees beyond.
The final design incorporated a circular patio near the house with adjacent planted gravel area and water feature, a gravel path led to a seating area and bench, rotated to take in the view. The steep slope was terraced and new steps constructed to provide access to a lower terrace.
In terms of the planting a large number of mature shrubs were retained which provided a backbone and enabled the new planting to focus on lots of perennials for colour, with grasses for height and movement. The new terraces created the space and ideal position for an informal prairie meadow style scheme with matrix drift planting.
